Flip-flops frowned upon in DC

Mixing sports and politics is dangerous--I don't know where to post my opinion. The same problem would occur if I reported on the Congressional hearings about steroids in baseball.

Washington is full of flip-flops, and the political ones (e.g. John Kerry) are probably outnumbered by the footwear. Sure, wear your flip-flops to the beach, but can they be worn to the White House? That's the debate aroused when the national champion women's lacrosse team from Northwestern University visited President Bush at the White House. The photo taken there shows 4 of 9 women in the front row wearing these casual sandals.

The women defended their choice of footwear, using the argument that these were not your typical beach shoes--these had rhinestones and cost $16. At least the women were not wearing denim at this dress-up event. I'm sure many of them would have preferred to wear jeans.

If you look carefully at the picture in the article, doesn't Bush look like a very happy man?
